In Cannes, The Martinez Rolls Out The Red Carpet With A Stunning Renovation
Famous Riviera hotel Martinez, built in 1929, has undergone a luxurious renovation at a cost of around 150 million euros and has reopened just in time for the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.
Hotel Martinez has a special place among the palaces of the Croisette. The largest hotel on the French Riviera (excluding the Principality of Monaco), it is one of those mythical places whose walls resonate with the glory of movie stars who, during the festival, make it their home.
The interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon (George-V in Paris) is responsible for the Martinez hotel’s new look. Large and tall glass doors now give access to a bright, grand Art Deco lobby crowned with a spectacular 350 kg contemporary chandelier.
A reception desk in rosewood garnishes the lobby. From there leads upwards the magnificent and original staircase, whose wrought-iron banister with monograms was scaled by the finest in world cinema, from Maurice Chevalier to Jane Fonda, for who Martinez remains one of her favorite addresses.
The new rooms are of an immaculate whiteness and boast king size beds whose headboards are extended by a mirror, and shelves with Mediterranean vases and white coral sculptures, whilst a yellow – or blue – plaid matching the cushions adds a touch of colour to this monochrome decor.
However, one minor point according to us, the swimming pool has simply disappeared: the basin now gives way to a beautiful garden dominated by palm trees. Customers will now have to opt for the private beach of Martinez whose reopening is scheduled for April 12 before undergoing a complete transformation in 2019.
Note: The hotel restaurant, La Palme d’Or, is the proud owner of the only two Michelin-stars in Cannes. Here is where traditionally the members of the jury are invited to dine the evening before the opening of the Festival. This year seas the opening of the Martinez Bar, directly on the Croisette, this new place, with a yachting atmosphere, will include snacking, drinking and dancing until 2 o’clock in the morning. During fine weather every Friday evening, chic evening parties with orchestra will be held in the garden, reconnecting to a tradition rooted in the legend of the hotel during the years up until the 1950s.
It will be necessary to await the eve of the Festival de Cannes, May 5, to discover all of Hotel Martinez’ novelties, but it’s worth the wait.
